Travel Buzz – Chicago for a Change

January 2011
Former Houstonians Kerry, Justine, Meryl and Marika Rudy take a break from a hike along Lake Michigan's north shore.

If there’s any city in the north that shares the friendly, can-do, internationalist spirit that characterizes Houston, it’s Chicago.

The Windy City, which ranks just ahead of Houston in population (No. 3 to Houston’s No. 4), is a similar melting pot of culture, with sizeable communities from nearly every country in the world. Like Houston, Chicago is an engine of …

January feels like a fresh start, a time of potential. “Exercise more” is a perennial resolution favorite. Often by February, however, we are already resigned to another year of inactivity.

Some of us were athletes as kids, so competing as adults isn’t such a stretch. But, as the following stories show, it’s never too late to discover your inner jock …

Back to School

January 2011
With a wife and two kids, Jarratt Kelso enrolled at the University of Houston to earn his bachelor’s and master’s in geology.

After four semesters at The University of Texas, Jarratt Kelso still didn’t know what he wanted to be.

So Kelso, then 20, left school and traveled for two years, supporting himself by working as a waiter, busboy and bartender. Going back to school was a vague thought, one of many possibilities.

In Seattle, he met Kasey McCaleb. They married in …

Indigo, age unknown
Labrador Retriever
Browning Street

My name is Indigo, or Indy for short. My age and parentage are a mystery. I was rescued by my adopted family four years ago. I’m a pretty smart girl, and my family sent me to overnight obedience school for two weeks. I learned all sorts of tricks like “place” (sit in one place) …

Adult Kids Return to the Nest

No sooner did I adapt to being a true empty nester than the unthinkable happened.

He’s back.

Yes, I’m talking about my adult son, along with the dreaded words, “What’s for dinner tonight, Mom.” (True story. First words out of his mouth.)

Brett recently finished law school, but, due to a severe injury and …

The theme of “Deep in the Heart of SVDP” brought hundreds of supporters wearing all things western to the event, which was chaired by (pictured, from left) Karen Haysley and Shannon Ramirez. More …

No Place for Bullies

January 2011
Students in some schools are being taught how they can prevent their friends and classmates from bullying others.

This started off being an article that we were going to call “Confessions of a Bully.” But the search for so-called “bullies” proved futile. It seems that those who have picked on others in the past, no matter how long ago and how reformed an adult they are now, are reluctant to admit it.

In recent months, bullying – the …

Not everyone wants to sit around waiting to grow old. After middle age arrives, and maybe even after it fades behind, when the kids are all grown, career goals have been accomplished or no longer are as important, there remain endless possibilities waiting to be discovered.

For many, the first step along the path of these new adventures is making …

January 2011
The St. John’s Mavericks girls field hockey team celebrates its victory over Fort Worth Country Day during the Southwest Preparatory Conference championship tournament.

The football season may be over, but the perfect season achieved by the Emery/Weiner Jaguars’ six-man football team will not soon be forgotten. With its championship at the season-ending Iron Man tournament for the state’s top independent teams, the Jaguars finished the year with a 12-0 record and ranked 31st among the 253 six-man high school football teams in Texas.…

Rumor Has It – January 2011

January 2011
Taking a break from the races at West University Elementary School’s field day are kindergarten students (from left) Rileigh Tompkins, Finley Mitchell and Taylor Klesel, portraying themselves as “Levitt Lions” in honor of their teacher, Lori Levitt.

Muggle gathering… Only an actual trip to Hogwarts could be more exciting than the opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One. Seeing the Gryffindor team in action again was a great excuse for a movie and a slumber party. Mary and Audrey Sommer, Katherine Ten Ayke, Meredith and Morgan Dickson, Lilli Reamer, Marie Atmar, Nicole Shanks
