Fun fall fest
Pierre Le Quilliec, a student from France staying with the Attwell family, lent an international flavor to St. Stephen’s Episcopal School’s fall festival. While high school students operated the festival and middle school students handled the spaghetti supper, Pierre (pictured, with Tanawit Pana from Thailand) and other AFS International students hosted a chili cook-off, preparing the chili and manning and decorating the station.
Heart of the ball
Roberta Bogaev of the Texas Heart Institute was named medical honoree for the American Heart Association’s 2012 Houston Heart Ball. Chairs Bobbie and John Nau got the ball rolling on the fundraiser with a kick-off party at their Silver Eagle Distributors facility. Attendees sipped cocktails and got sneak peeks at auction items to be offered at the Feb. 11 ball, including six landscape paintings by Texas artists and six 2012 Sewell Houston dealership vehicles, valued at a whopping $65,000 each. The Naus have a lofty goal of raising $1.8 million for heart-disease research, education and awareness. Pictured (from left) are John Nau, Bogaev and Bobbie Nau. Wrangling a championship
Championship baseball came to Houston this fall, after all. The Houston Wranglers, a group of 10 year olds, outscored their opponents 70-12 in five games to win the Nations Baseball 10U Elite Halloween Classic. Then they won four straight to take the USSSA Fall State Championship. The wins were team efforts, featuring solid defense, timely hitting and superlative pitching. Pictured hoisting their trophies after the Fall State tournament are (front row, from left) Grant McWilliams, Corbin Kinder, Benjamin Hananel, Hunter Guette and Nathan Bryant and (top row, from left) coach Rocky Flores, Caleb Sheffield, Matthew Allen, Ethan Samuels, Tom Vincent and Adam Farris.
Center stage
Chair Karen Pulaski performed quite a feat this year, pulling off a luncheon on the Jones Hall stage benefiting the Society for the Performing Arts. The luncheon, which raised $155,000 for SPA’s education and outreach programs, featured Tiger Mom Amy Chua as guest speaker. Patsy Fourticq was awarded the 2011 Ann Sakowitz Performing Arts Advocate Award, and the 320 guest enjoyed a champagne reception, lunch and decadent mini cupcakes prepared by Jackson Hicks. Pictured (from left) are Chua, Fourticq, Pulaski and June Christensen, SPA executive director. Also in the crowd were Anita Smith, Greg and Gregory Fourticq, Diane Lokey Farb, Terry Wayne Jones, Jay Jones, Chree Boydstun, Katy Caldwell, Kari Gonzales, Debra Grierson, Laura Baird, Kiki Wilson, Rosemary Schatzman, Arvia Few and Soraya McClelland.
Gridiron heroes
It was an epic clash for bragging rights and toys. Firefighters and police officers from West U used a touchdown in the game’s waning minutes to beat their counterparts from Bellaire 27-25 in the second annual charity flag football game at Episcopal High School. Admission to the action-packed game of first responders was an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots Foundation, and proceeds from food and raffle-ticket sales went to the foundation. Pictured (from left) are West U firefighter James Walger, EHS cheerleader Madeleine Kennedy, West U police Officer Philip Bennett, EHS cheerleader Haley Emerson, EHS cheerleader Taylor Betts and police Sgt. Allan Gomez.
Oh, baby
Carolyn and Glen Brock have a new apple of their eyes. Julia Elizabeth Brock was born at 8:57 a.m. Nov. 4. She entered the world at 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and 21 inches long, with blue eyes and some faint brown hair. Her brother, 2-year-old John, is adjusting to the new resident in his home.
Celebrating Samaritans
A record number of Krist Samaritan Center supporters turned out for the organization’s annual gala and signature fundraising event, A Samaritan Celebration, including (from left) Glenn Bauguss, Martha Turner and Diane and Brian Kingshill. The gala at the River Oaks Country Club honored Margaret Alkek Williams, Ron Hall, Denver Moore and Southwest Airlines with The Samaritan Spirit Award for their significant contributions to human health and growth. Through donations and auctions, the event raised more than $300,000 for the center’s counseling assistance fund that provides counseling and mental-health services on a sliding-fee scale.
Ultimate wedding
Thanks to their virtual friends and fans, newly engaged Tyler McQueen and Annie Blaylock are getting their dream wedding from a rock-star group of wedding vendors. With 38 percent of the Facebook vote, the couple won the Entwined 2012 Ultimate Wedding Giveaway Contest. The couple, who have been dating for five years, will marry in March in Fischer in the Hill Country. While McQueen, who graduated from Episcopal High, and Blaylock, who graduated from Lamar High, will personalize the wedding with their style and color preferences, the vendors will take care of everything else, including the cost, allowing the couple to relax and enjoy their wedding.
A success for dresses
A crowd of 500 Houstonians with a flair for fashion and philanthropy gathered at A Night Out, benefiting Dress for Success Houston, including (pictured below, from left) image consultant Cathy Fitzpatrick Cleary, organization president and co-founder Nancy Levicki, event chair Rachel Powitzky Steely and ABC Channel 13 anchor Sharron Melton. The Gardere Wynne Sewell law firm served as sponsor and helped raise nearly $152,000, thanks to the leadership of Powitzky Steely, a firm partner and member of Dress for Success Houston’s Corporate Guild. With the proceeds, the organization can purchase 500 business suits for women who need them and help fund professional-development programs to support more than 4,000 women. Also in the crowd were Anita Smith, Tana Wood, Dena Prasher, Mary Ann McKeithan and Eileen Lawal. (Photo: Kim Coffman)
Praise for patriotism
The Operation American Heroes Foundation awarded Robin Young-Ellis, pictured (middle) with Gordon Fox (left) and John Carloss (right), the Soaring Patriotic American Eagle Founder’s Award. In 2008, Young-Ellis founded Salute to our Troops Houston, an annual event honoring the sacrifices made by the men and women of the Armed Forces. The event has grown from 500 active duty and reserve military troops and their families to 2,300. In 2011, Young-Ellis gave her program to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and she helped start its first Armed Forces Appreciation Committee.
